Fraction Friday

Today for maths, we were learning how to order fractions.

We all started with one whole chocolate bar (unfortunately we only had a piece of paper, pretending to be a chocolate bar).

The children had to decide how they were going to share their chocolate bar. They could share it among 2 people - halves, 3 people - thirds, 4 people - quarters, 6 people - sixths, 10 people - tenths etc.

Once everyone had shared their whole chocolate bars, we came back together to see who would have the largest piece.

We placed the fraction pieces on the mat and sorted them from the largest fraction piece to the smallest.

The largest piece was our whole chocolate bar and our smallest piece was our tenth.

Clever Sasha spotted that as the denominator got bigger, the piece of chocolate (or fraction) got smaller. Nice spotting Sasha.

Daffodil Day

Today we enjoyed Daffodil Day. We are supporting the Cancer Society. Closer to home, we are supporting any friends and relatives that have been affected. We had a special moment at Syndicate Assembly, when Room 16 shared their thoughts on today. Nandhini (Room 16) shared her own experience with her bright amazing attitude.

Paige picked daffodils and brought them into class to share. We had a beautifully fragrant classroom all day. Thanks Paige for brightening up our day and supporting such an amazing cause.

What an amazing whanau time today. Sasha performed with the Jump Jam team and then went on to perform with Krisha in the Indian dancing routine. Monika also introduced her little brother Toby, who started school this week.

Kids Blog

We have started our own class blog today, using Kid Blog.

Each child has their own log on and only children set up by me, can enter and look at our Kid Blog.

This is a place for the children to share their work, with each other and their families at home.

We will be using this more and more over the next few weeks for the children to work on their writing, to publish their writing and to communicate their ideas with each other.

We have discussed appropriate behaviour on Kid Blog and that the same rules apply as in our classroom.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

New Maths Application

Math’s Homework – Room 15 Maths Class

I will be using a new I-Pad – App/website in class for maths. This application is called Front Row. It is a free application that you can download from the App Store, you can also find it at: https://student.frontrowed.com/#login.
Each child has been set up with their own log on. They will need three things to log on:
·      * First Name
·      * Last Name (For Room 16 children, their last name is Room 16)
·      * Class Code:
(This is our secure class code, please ensure that this is not shared with others)

When the children first log on they will find a range of areas to choose from. The first time they enter a new area, they will need to complete a small pre-test. This will allow them to start their practice at the appropriate level.
From there, they can practice the areas of maths that they need the most.

If they find that they are stuck on an area, they are able to find help directly from the application, and can practice before they continue.

They can use this software for their math’s homework, completing approximately 10 minutes each night.

If you have any feedback or questions, please feel free to contact me.

Rhona Bramwell (Robertson)

Today we had a special visitor. Rhona Bramwell came to speak with us. She is one of New Zealand’s most successful badminton players. She has been to 4 Commonwealth Games and 2 Olympic Games. She brought in her 3 Commonwealth Games medals to show us. She told us about her training and what it was like going to a Commonwealth Games. We were very lucky to have her in our class and sharing her amazing experience.
